1.0 INTRODUCTION
According to Benscotter and Rothwell (2012), Leadership is a process of individual influence on a group of individuals aimed at the achievement of individual and or common goals of the group or organization. Throughout history, leaders have been said to have unique qualities, some innate others extrinsic. In fact, some theorists have insinuated that leaders are born and not made. While it may be irrefutable that most great leaders through history share many of the same set of traits, this concept has not stood the test of time. In fact, a scientific study revealed that leadership is 30% genetic and 70% learned.
Whereas there is a genetic component of leadership occupancy, the biggest percentage is due to environmental influences, meaning that most leaders are made (Boerma et al 2017). While some people are born with innate leadership qualities and values, others develop them through learning and become great leaders through their experiences. The basis of a good leader is an honorable character and the ability to offer selfless services to his/ her organization. Respected leaders tend to focus on their beliefs and characters (who they are), their job, and tasks as well as motivating, and offering direction to their followers. Successful leaders also possess emotional intelligence.
Born leaders are those leaders with an innate ability to successfully manage and lead groups to achieve a given goal. They have intrinsic qualities to inspire and encourage followers to follow their vision. However, there are a number of courses today that can help people become great leaders and even compete at the same level as born leaders. All in all, most effective leaders are confident, have strong decision-making skills, and tend to be good with people. Great leaders are future-minded and approach every day with a sense of pragmatism and optimism.
Most great leaders possess more than strong interpersonal skills, they are assertive and have high emotional intelligence. True leaders have the confidence to stand alone, are compassionate, and have the courage to make tough decisions. In fact, they do not set up to become leaders but end up becoming leaders because of their actions and the integrity of their intent (Anderson 2015).
