INTRODUCTION
The evolution of technology is today changing the ultimate nature of work across all sectors and industries globally. Described as the ‘Fourth Industrial Revolution’, technology has continued to merge both the physical and virtual worlds. While many jobs have started to disappear, there has been a rise in other jobs to replace them. This has however left a skills gap in the labour market that need to be filled through upskilling and reskilling (British Council 2018).
This essay looks at the rise of Artificial Intelligence and machine learning, in which computers teach themselves tasks and rules by analyzing large sets of data. The key question to ask is whether this won't lead to large-scale worker dislocation, eliminating wide swaths of white-collar workers with many jobs currently performed by humans at risk of substantially being taken over by robots or digital agents as early as 2025. How would upskilling and reskilling help employees in the UAE from losing their jobs to AI and machine learning?
