1.0 INTRODUCTION
In 1970, Milton Friedman asserted that the only social responsibility of business is to make profits for shareholders, backing it up with the argument that outside this, outside keeping the law, all other responsibilities should either go to the government or other non-profit institutions. However, Carroll (1979; 1991) argued that while making profits was a key responsibility of business and indeed it should be a key priority, nevertheless it merely represented the foundation among other expectations and obligations businesses have towards society including legal, ethical, and philanthropic responsibilities. This argument for CSR came to be known as Carroll’s four-part model of CSR. Below, the report examines this argument plus the link to corporate governance.
