Briefing Note Task (1000words)
You are a member of the HRM department in a large customer service organization with 3,000 employees, based in the United Kingdom. In the last 18 months, the organization has experienced a number of problems. There has been a downturn in productivity, profitability, and customer satisfaction. In addition, your department has noted an increasing turnover in staff, and difficulty in recruiting the right talent needed. A number of staff surveys have indicated that employees do not feel that they are properly trained for many of their day-to-day tasks, and that they feel that the organization takes little interest in their long-term development. The board believes that this could be one of the root causes of the organization’s recent problems.
The Managing Director and the Board are considering the implementation of systematic staff development across the organization, and intend to conduct a special board meeting to discuss possible approaches to training and developing the workforce.
Your Head of HR has allocated the training and development approach listed below to present to the management board. You are required to research your allocated training and development approach and present information on the specific aspects listed.
Unfortunately, due to the measures currently being undertaken to lessen the spread of COVID-19, the Board has decided to cancel the meeting and has instead requested that you complete a 1,000-word briefing note on the topic below. Please include a Harvard-compliant reference list after your briefing note (which is excluded from the wordcount).
Briefing: Online/Remote/e-Learning using Multi-Media Activities (Banfield, Kay and Royals (2018) p.347)
Key Learning Outcomes
By the end of this assessment, students should be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of what a briefing note is
- Gain insight into the Online/Remote/e-Learning Multi-Media approach, the advantages, and disadvantages, and how this approach might address specific learning styles amongst employees.
- Demonstrate with examples how other organizations use this approach successfully, the budgeting considerations that should be borne in mind as well as any internal or external factors that may impact implementing this approach.
BRIEFING NOTE
Draft Resolution: Introduce e-learning (online learning) among employees
1.0 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
As a result of issues that have been raised in the organization in the past 18 months, the company carried out surveys and discovered that reduced productivity, customer satisfaction, and profitability were all a result of limited skills among employees and low interest by the company in developing skills among employees. As a result, the company has tasked members of the HRM department to research and come up with a training and development approach that will help combat these issues. This paper is going to discuss corporate e-learning as an approach that will help impart the needed skills among employees and help combat the rising issues.
2.0 BACKGROUND
Over the past 18 months, the company has experienced a number of problems including a downturn in productivity, profitability, and customer satisfaction. This has been a result of increased turnover rates among staff and difficulty in recruitment of the needed talent. The surveys carried out have shown that most employees are ill-trained for most of the daily tasks. Another issue discovered was that employees feel the organization does not take enough interest in their long-term development. The board has concluded this to be the genesis of all the company’s current issues.
This issue is however not limited to only our company as a report by the Society of Human Resource Management showed that 68% of HRM professionals are faced with challenges in recruiting full-time employees due to a skill shortage among applicants. This has resulted in an emphasized need to effectively train the already existing employee force in order to cut recruitment costs and reduce turnover rates.
3.0 RECOMMENDATION
I recommend the introduction of e-learning (online/ remote learning) among staff members.
What is e-learning?
E-learning has been defined as learning that is conveyed, enabled, and mediated through the use of electronic technology for the sole purpose of learning, development, and training (Torrington et al 2017; Banfield et al 2018).
