Abstract

This paper examines the impact of an employee’s culture on the way in which they work within an organizational context.  The paper focuses on a case study of China. Its methodology is a literature review of the scholarly work on organizational culture. It concludes that the Chinese have a moderately higher score on power-distance, collectivism, uncertainty avoidance, as well as a more long term orientation compared to organizational cultures in countries like the UK or United States. The impact on the workplace is multi-faceted. Due to collectivism, for instance, Chinese organisations put emphasis on social harmony and the collective good which shows up in lower pay differentials between top management and employees. High power distance also means Chinese workplaces are governed status and seniority. Nevertheless, the paper concludes that the complexity of Chinese society and individuals as western concepts of HRM takes root means that it is not always possible to justify the stereotypes.  Consequently organizations must operate imaginatively in order to get the best out of their Chinese employees.
